New site for cycling meet-up

The site for Saturday’s cycling meet-up and ride to the Oak Grove MBTA station has been changed. The new location is in front of the Melrose YMCA, 497 Main St.

The change was necessary due to the Republican campaign rally at Memorial Hall.

This event, open cyclists of all ages, is sponsored by the Melrose Energy Commission (MEC), Melrose Mass in Motion, Bike to the Sea and Malden is Moving. Representatives from these organizations will be on hand to offer cycling tips and answer questions.

Thanks to Malden is Moving and the Melrose Rotary, free bicycle helmets will be given away.

In addition, JRA Cycles of Medford and Stoneham’s City Cycle have donated gift certificates that will be given away through a free raffle.

In addition, there will be:

  • Free refreshments

  • Bike repair demos

  • Children's activities

  • An opportunity to meet other local cycling enthusiasts

The event will conclude with a group ride to Oak Grove Station and a tour of the new locked bike storage facility. There will also be a demonstration of the new bike racks on MBTA buses.

“Bicycling is great exercise and it’s also good for the environment,” said Ellen Katz, MEC co-chair and event organizer. “This is a great opportunity to meet some of the local groups that promote cycling, learn about your bike and have some fun.”
