The American Dream: Made in the USA

With the Fourth of July this week, I'm feeling very patriotic and my mind is consumed with U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A... So with my homeland spirit booming, I looked into a growing trend that hopefully will not be passing us by: the demand for American-made goods.

The main thing we always talk about with each other and our customers is how supportive everyone in Melrose is of shopping local. Melrose is one of the few towns left in the surrounding area with a downtown and great small businesses. Without the support of the people of Melrose and surrounding towns, the small businesses wouldn’t survive. Not only should we be supporting small businesses, we should be supporting American-made goods.

With the decline in American manufacturing and outsourcing to other countries it can be hard to just find American-made items. In a recent survey conducted by The Boston Consulting Group it was found that “more than 80% of U.S. consumers said they would pay more for American-made products that they would for products labeled “Made in China”.” Recently Apple declared that they are going to move their production back to the United States. In fact, countries like China, where it was once widely known how inexpensive manufacturing costs, are now raising the costs of production. This allows for less of a need to be overseas with production. Wal-Mart recently made a claim that they will spend an additional $50 billion over the next ten years to purchase and sell more American-made goods. Hopefully other manufacturers and businesses will take notes from such influential companies. Bringing production back to the United States will help to create jobs, boost morale and stimulate the economy.
