Melrose High School STEM Pathway Hosts Successful Events

A new addition to MHS this year was the STEM Pathway. On May 9, 2013, the students hosted an evening that featured two events: Senior Portfolio Presentations and STEM Career Night.

A new addition to Melrose High School this year was the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Pathway.  This program is designed for students interested in careers in science, engineering, technology, mathematics and health professions.  This program includes both academic and co-curricular components.  On May 9, 2013, the STEM Pathway students hosted an evening that featured two events: Senior Portfolio Presentations and STEM Career Night.

As part of their program requirements, three graduating students presented their accomplishments in the STEM disciplines.  In a presentation to educators, STEM Pathway students, and their families, Rachel Brown, Ashley D’Orlando, and Amanda Fountain shared their experiences in their coursework and STEM-related volunteer work.  They also described how their experiences at MHS have shaped their future plans. Rachel will be pursuing a degree in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  Ashley is looking forward to studying Biology at Brandeis University with a goal of becoming a Pediatrician.  Amanda will major in Mathematics at the University of South Carolina.

The STEM Career Night immediately followed the Senior Presentations.  A large number of students and parents in grades 6-12 chose to attend.  We welcomed six presenters including a civil engineer, a software engineer, a mechanical engineer, a biologist, a scientist from the EPA, and a nurse practitioner who representing several STEM careers.  The presenters shared details about their careers, how they entered the profession, and what made them choose the profession.  They also responded to questions from the audience.

What was most impressive about the evening was the work done by our STEM Pathway students.  They planned the evening including deciding on the format, recruiting presenters, publicizing the event, and facilitating the event.  This was an excellent opportunity for them to develop leadership skills which will assist them in their future careers!  We plan to offer an informational session after school in September for students who are interested in joining the STEM Pathway.
