Melrose Public Schools “Dig Into Reading” this Summer

The more we read; the better readers we become. To encourage and reward students' reading, the Melrose Public Schools sponsors a summer reading list, “Dig Into Reading” for all students entering grades K-5. Summer reading lists will be coming out to students during the last week of school.

All students entering grades K-5 are asked to read 30 minutes a day or at least 150 minutes every week.  Listening to another adult counts as reading. Students are asked to record their time on a reading calendar all summer long. Students should complete a written response about one book. The calendar log and written responses should be returned to your child’s teacher in August on the first day of school.

Of course, we want students to read much more than the required number minutes. Families can help their children learn to love reading. Schedule at least 30 minutes every day with your child to share reading together. Talk about what you are reading. Share stories and new ideas. Schedule a weekly trip to the Melrose Public Library to find new books and participate in their summer reading program. Most importantly, have fun together reading, talking, and learning.

We know that many families are busy all summer long with vacations and many activities. Carving out time for reading can be difficult. However, students from grades K-5 can lose up to three months in their reading level over the summer. This summer reading loss is well documented in the research. Reading as little as six books or as little as 30 minutes a day over the summer could prevent the summer loss.

Also, don't forget the summer reading program at the Melrose Public Library. They'll be incentives and activities all summer long to encourage children to read all summer long.

Summer reading lists, calendar log, and written response forms will also be available on the Melrose Public Schools website at www.melroseschools.com.

Summer Math

Students entering grades K-5 will get a Summer Math Calendar for the months of July and August. Each day of the month on the calendar will include a short math related activity. Students are asked to do any of the activities in any order. Students can do any of the activities more than once.  Students should complete twenty of the boxes in July and 20 in August.

The math calendars should be returned to your child’s teacher when school begins in August.

Summer math calendars will be coming home the last week of school and will also be available on the Melrose Public Schools website at www.melroseschools.com. Have a fun math filled summer!

Have an older student in grades 6-12. No worries! They’ll be reading all summer long too. Check out the Melrose Public School’s website for information on the middle and high school summer reading programs.
