Melrose High School Unites Over Summer Reading

At Melrose High School, learning does not take the summer off. For the second summer in a row, students will be participating in One School, One Book, an opportunity for all members of the Melrose community to read and discuss this year’s selection, Eric Greitens’ The Warrior’s Heart, the young adult adaptation of his best-selling memoir The Heart and the Fist.  In addition to the One School, One Book requirement, students are expected to read at least one other staff recommended book.

The Warrior’s Heart is the perfect book to unite a community through a single piece of literature, as it is an exciting and thought-provoking story.  When school begins again, students will participate in class discussions, assessments, a school assembly, and various activities, each designed to enhance the shared reading experience for everyone involved.

In addition to The Warrior’s Heart,  dependent on their level, students are required to select either one or two more books from a list of books recommended by Melrose High School staff members.

With a list that includes, among others, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, students are sure to find a book that will both be fun and interesting to read.

On the Melrose High School library’s website, students can read an explanation of why each teacher recommended his or her book, peruse reviews from goodreads.com, and find free audio copies elsewhere on the web.

Also, to keep students and staff connected, many teachers will be facilitating an online discussion forum hosted on edmodo.com.  When students return to school in the fall, they will meet schoolmates with similar interests in literature and participate in activities led by the teachers who recommended each book.
