From One Community to Another: The Melrose Dog Society Supply Drive for the Northeast Animal Shelter

Welcome to the Melrose Dog Society Dog Blog!  We look forward to bringing Melrosians and their canine companions the latest local happenings, pet care tips, and special interest stories.

For our inaugural post, we’d like to share a story of the generosity and kindness of those who are a part of the Melrose Dog Park Community.  Who makes up the dog park community you ask?  Anyone and everyone who visits the Melrose Dog Park at Ell Pond.

Over the past three weekends, members of the Melrose Dog Society have been down at the dog park collecting animal care items from its patrons to donate to the Northeast Animal Shelter, a non-profit, no-kill shelter located in Salem, MA. The Northeast Animal Shelter, or NEAS, partners with various animal rescue groups across the country to find homes for animals in need.  The donation drive was advertised on the Dog Society’s Facebook page, and the response from those who use the park was tremendous!  The MDS collected well over 200 items for the shelter.  The supplies, ranging from leashes and collars to dog food and medical supplies, will allow the Northeast Animal Shelter to continue to care for many cats and dogs as they await being adopted to their forever homes.

The donation drive was organized by the MDS in order to honor the success of the dog park, the generosity of the those who have donated to its operations, and the friendships that have developed between dog park goers.  "The Melrose Dog Society's motto is 'Responsible Neighbors & Happy Dogs.' It's nice to come together as a community and live out that motto by helping animals in need," said MDS member Lisa Tulipani, who delivered the collected donations with fellow MDS member Richard Federico (both pictured above) this past Saturday.

Richard and Lisa were also granted a tour of the shelter by NEAS staff.  They got to learn about the day to day operations of the shelter, see the animals available for adoption, and meet several of NEAS’s dedicated volunteers who provide love, care, and socialization to the shelter's many cats and dogs.  Richard was moved by all the hard work NEAS does for cats and dogs not only in Massachusetts, but all over the country, stating "It was extremely fulfilling to help out these dogs.  The [NEAS] Clinic does an amazing job helping out these animals."  You can take a peak at "a day in the life" of the NEAS here (you can chose to skip the ad to go straight to the NEAS video).

Thank you again to all who donated items to the Northeast Animal Shelter on behalf of the Melrose Dog Society! In addition to completing many improvement projects at the dog park this coming spring, the MDS plans to organize more charitable drives to benefit local animal welfare organizations in the future.
