New Science Wing Open House at MHS - Sept.7th.
I went to the open house Saturday morning to tour the new science wing at Melrose High School. The city spent 5.2 million dollars (with city & state money) to build new chemistry, physics, and biology labs along with equipment prep areas during the summer. Each room featured state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment including built-in Smart Boards and video projectors connected to the internet, as well as special student tables which can be easily adjusted to accommodate those who may be handicapped. All labs used existing windows to increase natural lighting in the rooms as well as special window blinds which stop all visible light to allow for video presentations. Equipment included the latest computers at each student station as well as fume hoods, biological hoods, incubators, steam sterilizer, small still to produce sterile water, dish washer, refrigerators, including eye wash and safety showers in each lab. The labs are setup to maximize flexibility of layout and use. It was quite impressive and will allow Melrose students to learn using the latest technologies and equipment while preparing to enter a very competitive world.
