President Obama and the Myth of Ho Chi Minh

Last week, President Obama met with Truong Tan Sang, the president of Vietnam, at the White House. At the end of their meeting, according to the official White House release, Obama said:

“We discussed the fact that Ho Chi Minh was actually inspired by the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and the words of Thomas Jefferson.”

Only our President is gullible enough to repeat the myth about Vietnam’s founder seeking a country modeled on our Constitution and Declaration of Independence! The fact is that Ho Chi Minh was always a committed Marxist-Leninist having trained at the infamous Lenin School in Moscow in the 1920s. He was known as someone who would say anything to anyone to get support and money to impose his Marist-Leninist doctrines on the people’s he conquered.

I believe that Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said it best recently, whose husband was a Vietnam combat veteran who was severely injured in battle while fighting for the ideals of Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Madison and Washington:

“Saying that a butcher who slaughtered his opponents and butchered those who resisted his tyranny was inspired by the ideals that make this nation the freest and most democratic country in the world belittles our Founding Fathers and those shed blood to protect their vision.”

Perhaps President Obama was taught this myth as a child by his mother and father who were known communist sympathizers. But now as a highly educated American, and now President of this country, he should have known better not to perpetuate this myth!
