What We're Obsessing Over: Coffee Tea & Me

A sweet new cafe has opened in Melrose! And we're in love.

"One cup at a time". That's how owner Lorenzo describes his philosophy on all things coffee. A life-long coffee aficionado and connoisseur, Lorenzo brings his dedication to his craft - and his customers - via new cafe: Coffee, Tea & Me.

The new telltale mark of life at 421 Main Street is the bright green table and chairs on the sidewalk. When we approached on Saturday, giddy with excitement for a new non-chain cafe, we were met by Lorenzo, who was sweeping out front. We told him we were writing a blog post (to be cross-posted at Melrose Patch), and he pulled out all the stops.

Lorenzo spent an hour and a half with us, explaining brewing methods, types of beans and going over the types of products he sells - all local and thoughtfully chosen. The gluten free cookies on the shelf sold out the first day they opened! A testimony to giving the community what it wants, if nothing else.

A note about the coffee itself: there was a science experiment type contraption on one of the tables, so we asked him about it. Turned out to be a one cup coffee maker. And then, he demonstrated how to use it.

The beans on the wall range from mildest in flavor, to dark roast. We opted for the mid-range Vienna. Lorenzo recommended letting the coffee cool a bit before drinking, to get maximum flavor. He also recommends drinking it black, to experience all of the notes.

The coffee we had struck the perfect note. It was dark yet fruity - figs, plums and vanilla were what we tasted. Lorenzo poured 6 small cups and let the customers looking on have a try.

While we were busy learning and taking photos during a late morning rush, Lorenzo's wife, Emily arrived - baked goods on trays and children in tow!

It's clearly a family business. Some of the baked treats have a Venezuelan influence: the key lime pie recipe hails from Lorenzo's mother. Emily also serves up empanadas - not your typical cafe fare, but appreciated by the customers who are waiting for them.

All in all, we couldn't say enough good things about this adorable new location. It has a homey, comforting vibe. It's high end without the snob factor. It's local without being preachy. It's everything one could want in a little neighborhood cafe.
