Alleged Three-Time Melrose Eastern Bank Robber Arrested

Saugus Police arrested a man on Wednesday who later allegedly implicated himself in the three Eastern Bank robberies committed in Melrose this month.

A man arrested by Saugus Police yesterday on outstanding warrants allegedly implicated himself in the after a bank teller identified him in a photo, according to Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle.

Joseph Decareau of Saugus was arrested on Wednesday by Saugus Police on warrants, Lyle said.

Meanwhile, Melrose Police detectives included a photo of Decareau in a photo array shown to bank employees, which Lyle said led to a teller identifying Decareau as the person who robbed Eastern Bank on Main Street last Friday.

Saugus Police presented the results of that photo array to Decareau.

"Ultimately, they got a confession on tape up at Saugus Police," Lyle alleged.

Lyle did not have additional information on Thursday morning regarding Decareau's age or the charges that resulted in the outstanding warrants, as he was awaiting a final report.

The was robbed on Friday, July 22. After the robbery, Melrose Police said they believed the same man who committed that robbery may be the person who robbed the on July 6 and July 16.

In each robbery, the man passed a note and did not show a weapon. Similar descriptions of the robber were given after each robbery: Early 20s slim, white man with black hair and brown eyes, wearing a black shirt, jeans and black hat.
