Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Melrose to Hold Candlelight Vigil

The Melrose Police Department will be participating in the Melrose Alliance Against Violence's annual Walk and Candlelight Vigil which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m., starting and ending at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School.

Melrose Police Department wants residents to know that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and that their department, along with the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, are continually doing work to keep the peace in the community.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the "Day of Unity" in October 1981 when it was conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, according to a police press statement. In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed, read the statement. 

In Melrose, the Domestic Violence Division is led by Detective Daniel Ehlers, who can be reached at 781-979-4432. The division is responsible for the follow-up of all victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, according to the statement. In cooperation with the Melrose Alliance Against Violence this division provides support and assistance to victims concerning matters such as restraining orders and victim witness advocates, according to the statement.

Annual Walk and Candlelight Vigil in Melrose

The Melrose Police Department will be participating in the Melrose Alliance Against Violence’s annual Walk and Candlelight Vigil which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m., starting and ending at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School, according to the statement. This event is held each October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, read the statement.

The Melrose Police Department also participates in the Verizon Hope Line Program, read the statement. This recycling and donation program collects wireless phones that are no longer being used, read the statement. Phones are refurbished or recycled and sold, the statement adds.

The funds raised from the sale of refurbished phones are used to purchase wireless phones combined with 3,000 minutes of donated airtime per phone for use by domestic violence survivors, read the statement. If you have a cell phone you no longer use, you can donate it to Verizon’s Hope Line New England Program at any Verizon Wireless store or at the Melrose Police Department Headquarters located at 56 West Foster St.
