Driving on Rim, Man Arrested on OUI Drug Charge

The driver allegedly struck several vehicles along Main Street on Sunday morning.

arrested a man at mid-day on Sunday on the charge of driving while under the influence of drugs, after witnesses reported he crashed into multiple vehicles on Main Street while driving on one rim.

Shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday, police received multiple calls reporting hit-and-run accidents involving a single vehicle on Main Street between Essex Street and the , according to Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau.

Those witness reported that the vehicle was a black Chevrolet Avalanche traveling on only three tires and one rim, DeCroteau said. When the first officer arrived in the area, he found the Avalanche parked in the alleyway between and the Fire Department leading to the City Hall parking lot.

After officers approached the vehicle and interviewed the alleged driver, Brian D. Knight, 30, of Saugus, they placed him under arrest on charges of a second offense of OUI drugs (heroin and clonopin); subsequent offense of possession of a Class B drug (clonopin); and five counts of leaving the scene of property damage.

"He struck several parked vehicles, according to wtiness accounts, and as well, the rim that he was operating on had done quite a bit of damage along the road surface all along the route that he traveled," DeCroteau said.
