Essex DA's Office Identifies Melrose Man Who Died After Being Pulled from Saugus Lake

The Essex District Attorney’s office says Luis C. Espinoza Montero, 34, of Melrose, was the man pulled from a Saugus lake Sunday evening who later succumbed to his injuries, according to an Associated Press report on the Boston Globe website.

Montero, who was listed in critical condition Sunday after being retrieved from Pearce Lake at Breakheart Reservation, at , according to a State Police press statement.

"The facts and circumstances remain under investigation by troopers from the Danvers Barracks, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the State Police Detective Unit attached to the Essex County District Attorney's Office," read the statement.

Shortly before 8 p.m., troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Danvers Barracks, as well as troopers specifically assigned to patrol the reservation responded to a near-drowning on Pearce Lake at the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, according to an earlier State Police press statement.

The male swimmer, later identified as Montero, was recovered from the water and was transported to the hospital by Saugus EMS, according to the statement.

No additional details are currently available, as the case is under investigation.
