A FedEx truck fatally struck a 90-year-old Medford woman in Somerville’s Davis Square Thursday morning.

The delivery truck was taking a right turn from Holland Street onto Dover Street at about 10:20 a.m. when it hit the female pedestrian, according to police.

Police have identified the victim as Helen Monagle. She was taken to Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge where she was later pronounced dead, police said.

The FedEx driver was 24-year-old Charles Reyes Fernandez, of Glenn Street, Melrose. He was cooperative after the crash and has not been charged, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation by Somerville Police and Massachusetts State Police.

“The exact circumstances of how and why this accident occurred remain under investigation,” Somerville Police Chief Charles Femino said in a statement, “and our condolences remain with the family and friends of the victim.

This is a horrible tragedy; my thoughts are with the victim's family and friends. This is absolutely unacceptable. As a community we *must* come together to demand safer streets. Delivery trucks and tow trucks in Cambridge and Somerville drive *much* too fast and whip around corners with abandon. The community needs to demand that these drivers *slow down* and exercise vigilance for pedestrians at all times. No one has the right to put citizens at risk in public spaces in the interests of delivering a package 4.7 seconds faster. We should also call upon companies like FedEx and UPS to use much smaller delivery trucks that are better scaled to the urban environment and the neighborhoods they serve, and which pose less of a danger to the public.

How about using what a lot of people lack in this day and age? Common sense and drop the cellphones and tablets.

Thoughts with all of those affected. I have always wanted to completely close Davis down to drivers and make it just a walking square like it is during the different festivals we have.
