Kitten Found Abandoned In Plastic Bag In Dumpster

Kitten now recovering and will be put up for adoption.

A three-t0-four month old kitten found inside a plastic bag in a dumpster on Hurd Street is now recovering from his ordeal and should soon be healthy enough to find a new adoptive home, according to Melrose Animal Control Officer Diane Kurkjian.

Melrose Police responded to a report at 5:15 p.m. on Friday, July 30 from a caller who said they found the cat; Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said that Kurkjian subsequently was contacted.

Kurkjian said the kitten, now named "Freddie," was very malnourished and covered with parasites.

"It's pretty sad; he's here with me at the office today," she said on Thursday. "But he's recovering really nicely. He's doing very well and I think he'll be healthy enough to adopt out soon."

Kurkjian said it was unclear if the kitten was tied up inside the bag or could move around inside the dumpster, but said the kitten was "very anemic and very thin" when he was rescued. The cat had no identifying tags and Melrose Police said, according to Kurkjian, that there was no way to trace back who might have left the kitten in the dumpster, which is accessible and used by multiple businesses and residences on Hurd Street.

"I think we'll be able to find him a home pretty quick," she said.
