Melrose Fire Department Announces Advanced Life Support Services

The Melrose Fire Department announced that as of July 3, Advanced Life Support services will be available from town ambulances.

"This is an important milestone for the Melrose Fire Department, and it reflects the dedication of Chief Leary, former Chief John O'Brien, and the Melrose firefighters to continuously improving and upgrading the department," said Dolan.

Advanced Life Support is a step up from Basic Life Support, which town ambulances have offered for the past two years.

"They can start an IV or intubate a patient if necessary," Leary said. "BLS is basic first aid, like splinting. A BLS crew can do CPR, but ALS can read a cardiogram and administer certain medications."

A town ambulance service ran from 1975 to 1992 and returned to Melrose in 2011 after the department received a public safety grant.
