Mobil Clerk, Robber Struggle For Cash In Wednesday Night Robbery

Melrose Police are investigating whether the robber made off with any cash from the gas station.

The clerk at the Melrose Mobil gas station struggled with a robber who jumped behind the counter on Wednesday night and snatched cash out of the register.

received a call at 9:06 p.m. from the clerk reporting that the store had just been robbed, Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said.

According to the clerk, the robber got behind the counter and took cash out of the register, after which a "physical altercation" took place between the male clerk and the robber. The clerk attempted to detain the robber, who eventually made it outside and ran away westbound on Grove Street.

Police checked the area along with the Melrose Police K-9 Unit, but could not locate the robber, DeCroteau said.

DeCroteau said that police are still inventorying the money at the store and could not comment on whether the robber made away with any cash after the struggle. He also declined to comment on any injuries resulting from the struggle, citing the ongoing investigation.

The robber was described as a white man, approximately 20-30 years old, six-foot-two, short red hair and scraggly facial hair, who was wearing a dark blue hooded windbreaker.
