Police Arrest Alleged Bank Robber, Vehicle Break-in Suspect

Police Arrest Alleged Bank Robber, Vehicle Break-in Suspect

At 4:51 a.m. Oct. 24, Melrose Police responded to Dell Avenue on a report of suspicious activity. A 911 caller reported that her husband witnessed someone attempting to break into her vehicle and startled the suspect who fled in the direction of Grove Street. The witness described the suspect as a white man, with a bald head, stalky build, wearing black pants and no shirt. Police found that no entry was gained into the vehicle and nothing was missing. A patrol officer located the suspect in the area of Lebanon and Malvern Streets. Edward Payne, of 43 Linwood Ave., Melrose, was arrested and charged with a felony count of nighttime breaking and entering into a vehicle.

Meanwhile, at 2:55 p.m. on Oct. 24, an arrest warrant was served in Reading. Daniel Malonson, 33, of 31 Tennyson Road, Reading, was arrested on four warrants out of Melrose, Methuen, Wakefield and Tewksbury, respectively. Malonson allegedly committed an armed robbery at the TD Bank on Main Street on Oct. 20.

Oct. 24

9 a.m.: Lebanon Street near Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, report of a truck leaking fuel in the roadway.

5:05 p.m.: Lynn Fells Parkway, several callers reported seeing smoke in the area due to a brush fire.

5:25 p.m.: Washington Street at Shadow Road, report of a brush fire. Police and Fire Departments responded. Police directed traffic on Washington Street. Police cleared the scene at 6:47 p.m.

Oct. 23

11:44 a.m.: A person visited the police station to report "tagging" vandalism on Main Street.

1:38 p.m.: A West Wyoming Avenue woman visited the police station to report credit card fraud.

4:22 p.m.: Bay State Road at West Street, report of a two-car accident.

6:08 p.m.: Penney Road, report of an accident in the woods.

9:07 p.m.: Grove Street, report of a domestic disturbance.

Oct. 22

9:32 a.m.: Rivers Lane, report of a past breaking and entering into a vehicle.

1:45 p.m.: Beech Avenue at Lebanon Street, report of a two-vehicle accident.

3:02 p.m.: Upham Street at Lebanon Street, report of a two-car accident.

3:29 p.m.: Forest Street, report of past breaking and entering.

7:20 p.m.: A person visited the police station to report their wallet was stolen in the Morgan Street area.

8:39 p.m.: Perkins Street, report of an accident. Parties involved in crash exchanged insurance paperwork.

Oct. 21

10:31 a.m.: City Yard at Tremont Street, report of a hit-and-run accident. A city employee reported that his vehicle was struck while parked on Tremont Street.

4:53 p.m.: Pleasant Street, report of harassing phone calls.
