Police Caution Of Possible Narcotics Dropped After Manhunt

Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle sent out an automated message on Wednesday as a precautionary measure after police discovered narcotics allegedly dropped during yesterday chase.

sent out a precautionary message to residents in the area on Wednesday due to the discovery of what appeared to be heroin following a manhunt and subsequent arrest on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, a man pulled over by a Melrose Police detective allegedly hit the detective and sped away in his car, coming to a stop on a home's lawn and ultimately discovered by the Melrose Police K-9 unit

Gabriel Valentine, 26, of 7 Grandfield Ave. in Roslindale was placed under arrest on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, failure to stop and malicious destruction of property over $250 (due to damage to the lawn where his car came to a stop).

Today, Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle said that "at some point during the foot chase he (Valentine) dropped illegal narcotics." Police are still awaiting the result of field tests to confirm what the substance is, but Lyle said, "it was packaged consistently the way heroin is packaged." He said he did not have the exact quantity that was allegedly dropped.

After the manhunt ended yesterday, Melrose Police called in a K-9 Unit from Wakefield Police to assist in combing the area for any additional narcotics that may have been dropped during the chase, Lyle said, adding that he sent out the automated message to approximately 540 homes on Wednesday afternoon as a precautionary measure.

"Just in case the officers missed something, I wanted folks to be aware if they saw something to contact the Melrose Police Department," he said.
