Police Eye Related Breaks Into Winthrop School, Car on Ashcroft Road 

Monday, July 25, 2:45 a.m. A resident told Melrose Police that they heard glass breaking at the and someone running from the area.

When officers responded, they found that somebody has smashed a window on the Ashcroft Street side of the school and attempted to get inside, and there was blood inside the building, Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle said. A "good-sized brick" was found in the window, Lyle added.

Just before 5 a.m., police also received a received a report that somebody had broken the rear passenger side window of a car parked on Ashcroft Road and left the door open. A GPS unit was missing from the vehicle.

"In the vehicle there was a considerable amount of blood," Lyle said. "We don’t know which (break) happened first."

Lyle said police believe the breaks may be related and that officers checked with local hospitals to see if anyone was admitted for a severe cut, but nobody had been treated around the time of the breaks, which remain under investigation.

Car Stolen From Pleasant Street

Tuesday, July 19, 6:59 a.m. A Pleasant Street resident told Melrose Police she woke up up and discovered her car was missing.

Lyle said that the car was parked in the lot adjacent to 107 Pleasant St. The car last registered to the resident was a 2000 Toyota Camry, he said, and last seen by the owner at 5:30 p.m. the day before.

"Apparently the woman had left a spare key in the car," Lyle said. "She had also left her pocket book in the trunk with her wallet. Apparently the individual who stole the vehicle has gone and used the woman’s Sovereign Bank debit card."
