Car Chase Through Highlands After Alleged Domestic Assault Ends in Stoneham

Monday, June 20, 9:28 p.m. A man charged domestic assault and battery led Melrose Police on a chase through the Highlands before crossing the town line and, ultimately, stopping for Stoneham Police, according to Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau.

When Melrose Police originally responded to a home on Greenleaf Place after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance, a responding officer saw a car described as belonging to the man wanted for questioning pull off Greenleaf Place and start traveling down Franklin Street, DeCroteau said.

The driver, Charles M. Casey, 39, of 3 Greenleaf Place, pulled right on to Ashland Street, DeCroteau said, "and started to stop but then quickly accelerated. We followed this vehicle with lights and sirens as it took several turns on Chipman Avenue, West Highland, and westbound into Stoneham ... fortunately, there were no collisions."

Stoneham Police eventually pulled over the car, apprehended Casey and returned him to Melrose, where he was placed under arrest on charges of domestic assault and battery; reckless operation of a motor vehicle; a subsequent offense of driving with a suspended license; failing to stop for police; marked lanes violation; and speeding.

DeCroteau said the case is still open and under investigation.

Woman Allegedly Throws Ticket Back in Cop's Face

Tuesday, June 21, 6:14 p.m. The passenger of a car that had a severely cracked windshield got out of the car and allegedly threw a ticket back at the Melrose Police officer who issued the driver a ticket for driving a vehicle with a safety hazard, DeCroteau said.

The officer was watching traffic in the area of Main and Franklin Streets when he saw a car where "the entire right side of the windshield was craked in a large web-like pattern," DeCroteau said. "That immediately drew the officer's attention as being an impediment to the driver's vision."

After the officer pulled the car over and spoke with the driver, he wrote up a ticket and handed it along with the driver's license and registration back to the driver, Erica M. Humphreys, 21, 933 Main St., Apt. 3.

When the officer returned to his cruiser, DeCroteau said the car's passenger, Amber D. Rabelo, 23, 122 Dustin St., Apt. 24, Brighton, got out of the front passenger seat and started walking back towards the cruiser, as the officer yelled out the window for her to return to the car.

"She ran to his drivers’ side and threw the paperwork—license, citation and registration—back at him in his face," DeCroteau said.

The officer got out and began to place Rabelo under arrest for disorderly conduct when Humphreys allegedly got out of the vehicle as well and interfered. The officer called for assistance, and Rabelo was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, and Humphreys was charged with disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer.
