Tuesday, Aug. 17, 3:24 p.m. A Cottage Street resident told Melrose Police that a man who she had an active restraining order against—and who previously lived at her home—had left behind a firearm in her home, DeCroteau said. According to the conditions of the restraining order issued on July 6, the man was required to surrender all firearms in his possession.

Melrose Police subsequently issued the 47-year-old man a summons on the charges of violation of an abuse prevention order, possessing a firearm without a FID card and threat to commit a crime, the last charge stemming from messages left by the man on the woman's answering machine.

Man Beaten With Tire Iron After Stepping Out Of Shower

Wednesday, Aug. 18, 10:48 a.m. A West Emerson Street resident was assaulted in his home after stepping out of the shower by a person known to him who was wielding a tire iron, DeCroteau said.

Melrose Police first received a call from the victim at 10:48 a.m. reporting that someone was breaking glass at his apartment building. When officers arrived, the victim said that his alleged assailant entered his apartment and began hitting him with what appeared to be a tire iron, then smashed items in the apartment with the tire iron before leaving the area in a motor vehicle.

DeCroteau said that there is no indication, based on the victim's statements, that there was any prior argument or situation that would have led to the assault. The victim was taken by ambulance to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for injuries sustained in the attack.

Melrose Police issued an arrest warrant for Patrick M. Eustace, 20, 138 Derby Rd., Melrose, on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of malicious destruction of property greater than $250.
