Notable events from this week's Melrose Police Department log.

Umpire Faces Charges For Flashing

Monday, June 14, 5:23 p.m. Melrose Police received a report of a man flashing at Wyoming Cemetery. Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle said the 50-year-old Melrose resident "apparently was doing refereeing or umpiring over at the Lebanon Street ballpark." The man was changing his outfit, Lyle said, and exposed his private parts to someone visiting the cemetery across the street. Police subsequently issued the man a summons for lewd, wanton and lascivious conduct.

"I made sure Mike Hughes [Wyoming Cemetery director] got a copy of the police report and recommended that he trespass [the suspect] from the cemetery," Lyle said.

Stolen Copper Downspouts Leads To Apology

Friday, June 18, 6:46 p.m. The manager of Randy's Car Wash on Tremont Street reported that copper downspouts had been stolen off the side of the building by two men who were known to employees of the car wash, Lyle said. Police retrieved surveillance camera footage showing the two men.

Later, two witnesses received threatening phone calls from the two suspects, Lyle said. Then on Monday, June 21, the car wash manager received a phone call from one of the individuals apologizing for taking the downspouts and saying he would replace the stolen items and reimburse the car wash.

"It's still an open investigation, but it looks to me the two culprits are going to reimburse the car wash," Lyle said. "That doesn't stop the investigation or us moving forward with a criminal complaint."

Saturday, June 19, 1:12 a.m. Melrose Police officers responded to a motor vehicle crash at Waverly Avenue and First Street, where they found a gray Volkswagen Jetta on the front lawn of a Waverly Avenue home, Lyle said. Three of the car's passengers fled upon the officers' arrival.

The driver, Michael E. Clark, 19, 22 Herbert St., Melrose, remained on the scene and spoke with officers, who had Clark checked by EMTs because the car's airbag was deployed, Lyle said. The officers detected a slight odor of alcohol on Clark and reported he had glassy, bloodshot eyes. Clark admitted to police that he had been drinking and after field sobriety tests were conducted, he was placed under arrest for OUI liquor and failing to stop/yield.
