Thrown Baby's Mother Testifies Against Father

Malden resident Crystle Sears told jurors that her child's father 'forcefully' threw their seven-week-old infant onto a Cedar St. sidewalk during an argument about her drug use.

The mother of a young baby testified against him at his criminal trial in Woburn Friday, telling the court he forcefully threw the infant over her person and said “take your (expletive) baby—I hope you both die” before fleeing the scene on foot.

Malden resident Crystle Sears told jurors she then made frantic attempts to revive her son Carmello, breaking into tears as she recalled brushing gravel out of her seven-week-old son's unconscious eyes and screaming for help.

Melrose resident Carlos Edwards faces charges punishable by up to 20 years in prison, though he maintains that he threw the baby to Sears for her to catch, not to injure the child.

Sears said the incident occurred while the two fought about money misspent to feed Sears's crack cocaine addiction, but maintains she is now six months sober.

The now 1-year-old Carmello and his two unidentified sisters are in state custody.
