Underground Electrical Short Causes Loud Bang, Smoke in 200 Block of Main Street

There was no report of power loss and the street reopened after briefly being closed due to the investigation.

An electrical short in a manhole in front of the at 278 Main St. in Melrose caused a loud bang and smoke to seep out on Wednesday morning, but there was no power loss and National Grid is on the scene.

According to the , the street reopened around 11:50 a.m. after an investigation.

Resident Elizabeth Solmon said she heard "one loud band, and then a big puff of black smoke" came out from the grate in front of 278 Main St., followed by lighter gray smoke seeping out.
