Winthrop School Break-In Suspect Turns Himself In

The 19-year-old Melrose man faces a court summons on a breaking and entering charge, according to Melrose Police.

The suspect sought by after a early morning break-in at the two weeks ago turned himself in after police released surveillance photos of him at the the same morning as the break-in, covered in blood.

Robert Brown, Jr., 19, of Melrose was not arrested when he came to the police station days after the break-in, Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said, but he will be summonsed to Malden District Court on a charge of breaking and entering.

"Based on an investigation and information we received as well, that person has been identified as the person who broke into the school," DeCroteau said.

On Thursday, July 28, Melrose Police that showed a young man that Melrose Police say entered the gas station at 3:15 a.m. the previous Monday with blood on his shirt and hands.

A half-hour earlier, police had responded to a resident's report of the sound of breaking glass at the Winthrop School and someone running from the area. Police found a broken window on the Ashcroft Street side of the school and .

Also that morning, just before 5 a.m., an Ashcroft Road resident discovered someone had broken the rear passenger side window of their car and a GPS unit stolen.

Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle previously told Melrose Patch that "there was a considerable amount of blood" inside the car and that police believe the Winthrop break-in and car break-in could be related.

This week, DeCroteau declined to comment on whether Brown will also faces charges for the car break-in and GPS theft, citing an ongoing investigation.
