Board of Aldermen - Property Classification Public Hearing

The Melrose Board of Aldermen will hold a public hearing on property classification.

Under state law, the aldermen can shift a portion of the property tax burden from residential properties on to commercial, industrial and personal property. The state sets a formula, based in part on the ratio of commercial property to residential property, that determines how much of the tax burden the aldermen can move from residential properties onto commercial properties.

At the public hearing, the aldermen will hear a presentation from the Melrose Board of Assessors before determining the tax rates for next year.
