Dog Park Discussion at Park Commission Meeting

On behalf of the Melrose Park Commission I would like to invite you to the Mount Hood Clubhouse on Monday July 11 at 7:00PM to the monthly Park Commission meeting to discuss the potential, off leash area for dogs located on Mt. Hood property.

A safe, off-leash area was initially conceived by the City of Melrose to alleviate health and safety issues on the city's fields. The Melrose Health Department, including the Melrose Canine Control Officer, held a public meeting in February 2009 to determine the level of public interest and to involve the citizens in assisting with this effort. The Melrose Dog Society was established shortly after this meeting with one objective being to support the establishment of a dog park where dogs may run off-leash legally within a designated, protected fenced in area.

After much discussion on many proposed locations by city officials, the public at large and the Melrose Dog Society, the site currently being considered is an area behind the lower maintenance garage, west of First Pond and South of Stillman Rd.

We are seeking to address the needs and concerns of neighborhood, residents, city government, and future users of the park. We welcome and value your opinion on this matter.

If you would like to offer feedback but cannot attend this meeting, a written copy of your thoughts can be mailed to: Melrose Park Commission, 100 Slayton Road, Melrose, MA 02176. You may also e-mail a letter to jbell@cityofmelrose.org.

Please feel free to contact myself, Joan Bell, if you have any questions. Thank you.
Regards,
Joan Bell
Superintendent of Mt. Hood & Public Open Space
