State Primary Election on Tuesday

Contested primary races for Republican state representative candidates, Democratic state senator candidates.

Melrose voters will choose on Tuesday, Sept. 14 which Democrat will vie for the state Senate seat representing Melrose Wards 1-5 and which Republican will vie for the state representative seat that represents all of Melrose in this fall's elections. State Senate

With Sen. Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, leaving his state Senate seat to run for lieutenant governor alongside Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker, Democrats Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Melrose, and Michael Day, a Stoneham attorney with Mintz Levin in Boston, are seeking to take Tisei's place in the Senate. The winner of September's primary will face off in November against Republican Craig Spadafora, president of the Malden City Council  and a financial analyst with Lynnfield-based Investors Capital Corporation.

Clark's candidacy for Senate vacates her own seat representing the 32nd Middlesex district. Three Republican candidates will face off in September's primary: Monica Medeiros, Melrose Ward 2 Alderman; David Lucas, a Melrose attorney with Nigro, Pettepit & Lucas of Wakefield; and Wakefield's Eric Estevez. The winner of September's primary will face off against Democrat Paul Brodeur, Melrose Alderman at-Large, in November's election.

Governor's Council

There are also contested primaries for the state Governor's Council, which has eight councilors that vote on the governor's pardons, payments from the state treasury, and gubernatorial appointments, including judges.

Melrose voters in Wards 1-5, within the council's sixth district, will vote on replacing retiring Councillor Michael Callahan. The winner of September's primary between Democrats Suzanne English-Merullo and Terrence Kennedy will face off against Republican Paul Caruccio in November.

Melrose voters in Ward 6 and 7, within the council's fifth district, will vote in September on what will be the de facto election, as there are no Republican candidates. Democratic incumbent Mary-Ellen Manning faces a challenge from fellow Democrat Jason Panos.

Statewide contested primaries

In other contested primaries on Tuesday, Democrats Steven Grossman and Stephen Murphy will vie for the right to face Republican Karyn Polito in November for state Treasurer; current state Treasurer Tim Cahill is running for governor as an Independent.

Three Democrats and two Republicans are seeking to take over for retiring state Auditor Joe DeNucci. The Democrats are Suzanne Bump, Guy Glodis and Mike Lake; the Republicans are Mary Connaughton and Kamal Jain.

Republicans Gerry Dembrowski and Tom Tierney will face off in September's primary for the right to challenge incumbent Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, for his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
