Where to Vote on Tuesday: Special Senate Election

Tuesday's election pits Democrat Ed Markey against Republican Gabriel Gomez to see who will take John Kerry's former Senate seat.

Voters in Melrose and around the state will go to the polls Tuesday in a special election for U.S. Senate.

Ed Markey, a Democratic congressman from Malden, is running against Republican Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and businessman from Cohasset.

The election will determine who will take John Kerry's former seat in the Senate. Kerry stepped down earlier this year when President Barack Obama appointed him secretary of state.

But just how many voters will turn out is a key question: Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin said he was expecting record low turnout Tuesday, according to WBUR.

Among other things, Galvin said extrememly low numbers of absentee ballots have been turned in, the radio station reported.
