Two seventh-graders from Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School got the Melrose Emergency Fund’s fund-raising season off to a good start with a donation of $122. Rose Meier and Chloe Solomon raised the money by selling raffle tickets to their fellow students.

“I am touched and very impressed that Chloe and Rose took the initiative to raise these funds,” said Mayor Rob Dolan. “They will help us move closer to our goal of having no family go cold or hungry in Melrose this winter.”

Fuel is a particular concern this winter, with federal fuel assistance currently funded at only 40% of last year’s level. “Many families depend on fuel assistance to get them through the winter,” said Dolan. “With cuts to assistance, they may have to choose between food and fuel.”

The Melrose Emergency Fund provides one-time help to Melrose residents who are experiencing economic distress. The fund is administered by the staff of the mayor’s office. “I am very proud that every penny donated to the fund goes directly to aid for local families,” said Dolan. “There is no overhead.”

To make a donation, send a check to Melrose Emergency Fund, Mayor’s Office, 562 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176 or bring it directly to the Mayor’s Office on the second floor of City Hall. Checks should be made out to the City of Melrose, with “Melrose Emergency Fund” in the memo line. For more information about the fund, call 781-979-4440.
