Make Your Process Your Identity

Great teams are no accident. Having good leadership, values, a consistent process with monitoring and feedback never goes out of style.

So you’re the leader. Don’t forget the “leadership paradigm”, whether you’re in the boardroom or on the basketball court.

LEADERSHIP VISION RESULT Poor Poor New leader Poor Good New leader Good Poor New vision Good Good Support leader

I can't remember for sure, but this table likely comes from leadership author John Maxwell.

You must earn support through both responsible leadership and articulating a clear vision for your program.  The differences between the Amundsen and Scott expeditions in reaching the South Pole were simply life and death.

First principle: (from Bill Belichick) build a team, not a collection of talent.

Second principle: establish an identity (create a culture of quality and class on and off the court)

Third principle: teach players from the ground up (footwork to mental approach) using the great tools available. "What matters is not what you teach but what you emphasize."

Fourth principle: constantly monitor whether your team has learned the material taught and adopted both the vision and the process.  Reinforcing the process and rewarding the players who embrace and adopt it results in a much higher chance to succeed.

Fifth principle: be a good listener.  You don’t know everything and even the best self-assessment is vulnerable to personal biases.  But never compromise your values.  As Bobby Knight reminds us, “if you listen to the fans in the stands, then pretty soon you’ll be up there sitting with them.”
