No Quotas*

Students are assigned a minimal amount of summer reading. Let's have no quotas on reading and learning this summer.

Recently, I asked our young basketball players what they're reading. They answered pretty uniformly, "We finished reading the three summer reading books." How can we meet our twin goals of excellence in the classroom and on the court without commitment to improvement and a love of learning?

Books on my mother's bookshelf became summer reading, "The Making of the President, 1960," "The Rothschilds," and "I'd Do It Again," the autobiography of legendary Boston Mayor James Michael Curley.

Melrose has an excellent library as a reading resource and sites like Project Gutenberg.
