"Arrr!" Is For Recycling on DPW Day

Kids got to explore DPW vehicles and equipment while learning about recycling, engineering and more.

Melrose kids learned about recycling, engineering and more, while getting to play on some big "toys" at this year's Public Works Day, held at the City Yard on Tuesday, June 8.

Some of the activities had a pirate theme in keeping with this year's theme of "Recycle Island." In addition to climbing into, on and under some of the Melrose Department of Public Works' (DPW) vehicles and machines — and honking the loud horns, to the consternation of some of their peers — children viewed exhibits on recycling; learned how water gets to the faucets in their home; and about engineering through the tasks undertaken by the DPW.

Take a look at some of the photos from this year's event in our gallery.
