Breakfast With New MHS Principal on June 23

The mayor's office and the Melrose Chamber of Commerce are co-sponsoring the breakfast with incoming Melrose High School Principal Dan Richards.

Mayor Rob Dolan and the will co-sponsor a breakfast with incoming Principal Dan Richards on Thursday, June 23, at 7:45 a.m. in the G.A.R. Room upstairs at , the announced in a press release on Tuesday.

, Superintendent Joe Casey announced that he had chosen Daniel Richards, who is currently the assistant principal at Belmont High School, to replace retiring MHS principal Joseph Dillon.

Those interested in attending the breakfast should call the mayor’s office at 781-979-4440 by Monday, June 20 to RSVP.

In the press release, Dolan said, “I hope that members of the business community will take this opportunity to get to know Mr. Richards. The high school is the flagship school of our community, and it is important to all of us, not just those who have students in their families. This will be a chance for people who don’ t have a direct connection with the high school to not only meet Mr. Richards but share their concerns and priorities with him.”

Before becoming Assistant Principal of Instruction at Belmont High School—a position he has held for six years—Richards was a classroom teacher and then Business and Technology Department chair and Class Master at Newton South, where he worked for eight years.

While at Belmont High School, Richards collected a number of accolades, including being named Massachusetts Assistant Principal of the Year in 2010 by the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association. Richards was also one of three finalists for the 2011 Assistant Principal of the Year award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, one of the many organizations in which Richards is an active member.

At Belmont High, Richards became known for his work with state testing and related educational proficiency, professional development for faculty, crisis management and BHS's diversity program.

Richards graduated from Niagara University with a B.A., then went on to receive master's degrees in educational leadership and negotiation and conflict resolution at Salem State University and Cambridge College, respectively.
