On Thursday, April 19, the Melrose Historical Society will hold its spring meeting at the First Congregational Church on West Foster Street starting at 7:30 pm. The guest speaker will be Ellen Berkland, DCR Archaeologist and former Boston Landmarks Commission Archaeologist during the period when the Big Dig was under construction. The title of her presentation is: “The Peopling of the Place We Now Call Melrose.”
Ms. Berkland has degrees from Dickinson College and Boston University. She has lectured at numerous universities in the Boston area, and has been the Principal Investigator of the Elder James Blake House in Dorchester, the oldest house in the city, which also happens to be where she lives. Ms. Berkland knows Melrose well, having graduated from Melrose High School, and having spent many hours hiking the Fells, Mt Hood, Bellevue Golf Course and Breakheart Reservation with her father and three brothers.
The Melrose Historical Society welcomes all Melrose residents to this free presentation. Come and discover who was here before the first English settlers, and how those settlers first viewed the landscape of our city. Come and also learn about the Historical Society and how it tries to celebrate our city’s heritage and traditions.
