Melrose Bests New Mission, Plays Brighton Next in MIAA Tournament

The top ranked Melrose High School boys' basketball team narrowly beat no. 8 New Mission 69-65 Saturday night at home in the quarterfinals. Melrose advances to the semifinals to play no. 5 Brighton Tuesday in Woburn.

The top ranked and undefeated Melrose High School boys' basketball team narrowly beat no. 8 New Mission 69-65 Saturday night at home in the quarterfinals of the MIAA North Division 2 tournament, according to the Boston Globe.

Senior guard Samual Jean-Gilles tallied a team-high 21 points for Melrose, while Juwan Gooding scored 18 in the loss for New Mission, according to the Globe.

Melrose (22-0) advances to the semifinals to play no. 5 Brighton (17-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Woburn. Brighton advanced by beating no. 4 Salem (16-6) 82-61 Friday night in Salem.

Melrose, which earned a bye in the preliminary round of the tournament, beat no. 16 Arlington (11-11) 76-52 Thursday night in Melrose in the first round of the tournament.
