The Melrose Education Foundation and Melrose Public Schools will host a free Family Math Night for elementary school-aged students and their families on Thursday, Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m. in the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School cafeteria.

The event will feature several math game stations designed to entertain and challenge students and parents alike. Students will receive a passport to be stamped at the completion of each station’s activity, and students who complete all activities will be entered to win one of several door prizes. Math coaches, elementary school principals, and volunteers will run the game stations and answer questions, while Dr. Margaret Adams, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, will be available to discuss the district’s new math curriculum.

“With the introduction in September of a new math curriculum that requires students to approach math concepts quantitatively and from a variety of perspectives, the Family Math Night offers a fun and educational opportunity for students and parents to explore the new approach together,” said Dr. Adams. She adds that the middle school held a well-received math night last winter (with another scheduled for Jan. 30), and that successful elements of that event will be incorporated into the elementary school-aged Family Math Night.

Pizza and water will be sold during the Family Math Night. All proceeds will benefit the Melrose Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises private funds to provide grants to pay for initiatives that enrich curriculum and offer opportunities that are beyond the reach of the district’s budget. Working collaboratively with the Melrose Public Schools, the Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of all students in the district.
