Roosevelt Fourth Graders, Hoover Fifth Graders Win Mayor's Cup Math Challenge

Teams from all Melrose elementary schools gathered at the Lincoln School on Monday, May 2 to participate in the 2011 Mayor's Cup Math Challenge.

The Lincoln School was the place to be on Monday, May 2 when the Melrose Elementary Schools held the 2011 Mayor's Cup Math Challenge. Teams of six students from the fourth and fifth grades at , , , and competed for the championship and the honor of displaying the Mayor’s Cup at their school for the next year.

The first round of this two round competition was an individual test of 15 multiple choice questions. The students had 15 minutes to complete the test which was scored by volunteers from The Bridge: A School/Community Partnership. Each correct answer added 1 point to a team's total score. During Round 2 each team had to discuss, solve, agree on, and present one answer. There were 16 problems of varying difficulty.

The room was packed with excited spectators; family members and teachers. Many in the audience quietly tried doing the problems along with the students. And the winners were ... the students from the Roosevelt School fourth grade and the Hoover School fifth grade.
