School Budget Public Hearing Scheduled for Tuesday, March 8

The public is invited to share their thoughts on next year's Melrose Public Schools budget.

Members of the public are invited to the Melrose School Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 8, when the committee will hold a public hearing starting at 7:45 p.m on the School Department’s fiscal 2012 budget.

In January, Melrose Schools Superintendent Joe Casey submitted a proposed budget of $27,683,961 for next year, which is an increase of 1.6 percent over the 2011 fiscal year budget. Staff salaries represent 79 percent of the proposed budget―nearly $22 million in total―and a 5 percent increase over last year's total.

Over its past three meetings, the committee has been hearing from principals and administrators about their proposed budgets for next year. Melrose Patch's coverage of budget discussions during those meetings:

Christine Casatelli, chairwoman of the Finance and Facilities subcommittee, said in January that committee members are asked to bring forth specific proposals as the budget review continues, with the goal of approving a final budget on March 22.

After the public hearing on March 8, the committee will conduct a public budget deliberation on March 15, with a discussion and vote on five budget categories: salary; text, supplies and materials; other general expenses; physical plant; and athletics.
