Two Bomb Threats in Two Days at Melrose High School

MHS was put on lockdown on Friday morning while bomb-sniffing dogs checked Melrose High School for the second day in a row.

A day after a bomb threat led to an evacuation of , another threat on Friday morning led to another search of the school—although no evacuation—and again, nothing was found.

Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle, who was in New Hampshire on Friday morning and did not have immediate access to all the details of the threat, told Melrose Patch late Friday morning that a "shelter search" was conducted.

"Basically, they secure the kids in a classroom and they bring in the dogs, search the inside and outside," Lyle said.

According to a press release from Superintendent Joe Casey, at approximately 9:30 a.m. the threat was brought to the attention of school officials. The threat was written in a boys bathroom at Melrose High School indiciating a bomb threat with today's date. Yesterday's bomb threat was also found written on a boys bathroom wall and .

After contacting the and , officials determined that "today's note was a low level threat," according to the release. Two police dogs were seen in front of Melrose High School this morning, along with Melrose Police detectives.

"The school activated our Shelter-in-Place protocol with no loss in learning time," the release stated. "Following a thorough search of the high school by public safety officials, it was determined that staff and students could safely continue following their normal school day schedule. At no time was there a threat to students and staff at the high school and middle school."

An investigation as to who wrote the note is underway.

It was brought to the attention of school officials at approximately 9:30 a.m. today that another note was written in a boys restroom in Melrose High School indicating a bomb threat with today’s date. School officials contacted the Melrose Police Department, along with the Melrose Fire Dept. It was determined that today’s note was a low level threat. The school activated our Shelter-in-Place protocol with no loss in learning time. Following a thorough search of the high school by public safety officials, it was determined that staff and students could safely continue following their normal school day schedule.

At no time was there a threat to students and staff at the high school and middle school. Parents should note the school and police are conducting an investigation to identify the responsible parties. We take all threats seriously and the focus of school officials and the police department are the safety of students and staff. We wish to thank all students, staff and parents for their cooperation in allowing the school and public safety officials to do their job and keep our students safe.
