Whiz Kids of the Week: Mia Catalini and Cassandra Tervalon

The fifth graders from Lincoln Elementary School are finalists in Allergy & Asthma Today magazine's Ultimate Inhaler contest.

Melrose Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Mia Catalini and Cassandra Tervalon

  • School:
  • Accomplishment: They are finalists in Allergy & Asthma Today magazine's Ultimate Inhaler contest.

How they got there: They came up with the idea of necklaces for boys and girls with asthma that they could wear all the time. The ones for girls would have jewels on them, and the ones for boys would be sports-themed, according to Gail McCarthy, a nurse at the school.

"I'm so proud of them!" she wrote in an email. "They are the captains of our Lincoln School Asthma Group this year, are very enthusiastic, and have lots of great ideas."

What's next: Vote for the girls' idea by contacting the magazine's editor at editor@aanma.org or 800-878-4403 with your name and mailing address. If the two win, they get to go to Washington, D.C. to take part in the AANMA's Allergy & Asthma Capitol Hill Day in May and feature their invention at the Allergy & Asthma Technology Expo.
