Anna Pecci, a Winthrop fourth grader in Mrs. Ogiba's class, wrote one of the top 10 writing submissions for the 2011 Will McDonough Writing Contest.

Will McDonough, a former Boston Globe columnist of 44 years, was the only Globe sportswriter to be nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. He passed away in January 2003 and was best known for his coverage of the Patriots and the National Football League. McDonough was a mentor to young writers and, for this reason, the Sports Museum and his colleagues from the Boston Globe dedicated this contest in his memory.

This contest, supported by Bank of America and the Boston Globe, is judged on topic development, organization, style and mechanics.

Anna chose to write about Shawn Johnson and how confident and what a good sport she is being happy for her fellow gymnasts and friends when they perform well and beat her, because Anna is a level 5 gymnast herself training and competing for the Melrose YMCA. Anna is training for and plans to move up to level 6 next season. Congratulations to Anna on a writing piece well done!  Anna is an athlete and a scholar.
