Nick Krasco, a senior defenseman on the Mystic Valley hockey team and Melrose native has been honored with this year’s Commonwealth Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award.

For the past eight years, the MIAA, Boston Bruins and the Sportsmanship Alliance of Massachusetts have partnered to honor one student-athlete from each boys and girls ice hockey league in the state for best demonstrating a commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship in their conduct on and off the ice.

Krasco is a two-year tri-captain of a varsity program in its second year of existence that has struggled to win, and, at times, compete. Through the adversity, his enthusiasm, love for the game and positive support of his teammates never wavered. Nick’s passion and commitment kept the team spirited and on track.

While modest and humble, Krasco has a strong self-confidence and good set of values which lead him to make good decisions and be a tremendous leader.  He took on a mentoring role with younger teammates by being open and approachable, leading by example and, often, driving some of them to and from the rink.

He showed respect and sportsmanship, along with the other captains, by shaking hands with the opponent’s coaches before the game, without any direction to do so.

On the ice, Krasco is a two-time league all-star and among the team’s leading scorers from his blue line position. During his career, he has selflessly changed positions at times and been willing to do anything for the betterment of the team.

Also a varsity lacrosse player and member of the National Honor Society, Nick Krasco is an outstanding representative of Mystic Valley, the Commonwealth Athletic Conference and what being an MIAA student-athlete is all about.
