Melrose Football Wins Division 3 Northwest Championship

With the victory, the Red Raiders advanced to the Division 3 state semifinal game.

The Melrose High School football team fought off an early Woburn charge and used big plays to pile on the points in the remaining minutes to earn the Northwest Division 3 championship on Friday night.

Woburn took the opening kick off and drove down inside the Melrose 10-yard line, but missed a field goal to end the drive. The Red Raiders then went on to score 28 unanswered points to take control of the game. Melrose went on to a 31-7 win on its home turf.

With the victory, Melrose improved to 8-1 on the season and advanced to the Division 3 state semifinal next week against either Tewksbury or Marblehead. The winner of that game will play at Gillette Stadium with the state championship on the line.
