Sports Roundup: Girls Tennis Sweeps Stoneham, Update: Sports Postponed for Today

The Melrose High girls tennis team beat Stoneham, 5-0, on Tuesday.

Update: All sports today have been postponted and are TBA. 

The girls tennis team swept visiting Stoneham, 5-0, on Tuesday, as Emma McGowan (first singles), Sarah McGowan (second singles) and Lydia Mays (third singles) all won their matches in consecutive sets. 

Charlotte Mays and Shannon Tarpey won, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, at first singles and Julia Mongeau and Natalie Kendall won at second doubles, 6-4, 6-4.

Melrose will head to Reading today at 3:30 p.m., but with rain in the forecast all day, that match is likely to be postponed. 

Boys Tennis

Melrose 3, Stoneham 2

Tim Mongeau picked up his first win of the season for Melrose, clinching the match for the Red Raiders, while Tim Cobau won his second straight match and senior also Zach Bachiri won again.

Melrose is scheduled to host Reading today at 3:30 p.m., so check back later for updates on postponements. 

Softball

Melrose 15, Belmont 3

Pitcher Morgan Phipps picked up the win for Melrose while having a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a HR.  Athena Ziavras went 3-for-3 and also smacked a home run. 

The Lady Raiders head to Burlington on Thursday for a 3:45 p.m. game. 

The Melrose baseball team, who beat Belmont 7-4 on Tuesday, will travel to take on Burlington at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. 

Boys Track

Lexington 88, Melrose 48

Cody Lusas won the shot put for Melrose with a throw of 50-6, while Kevin Person won the 100 with a 11.4 and took first in the 800 with a 22.8. Aaron Jones took second in the 100 with a 11.9. 

Up next for Melrose is an away meet at Woburn on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. 

Girls Track

Lexington 81, Melrose 55

Bionca St.Fleur won the 200 with a time of 26.2 and took second in the long jump with a 16-0 while Ashley Bellfield won the 200 hurdles with a 17.5 Laura Whalen took third in the mile with 5:53.8 and Kaitlin Gilbert took third in the 200 with a 28.3

The girls head to Woburn on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. meet.
