Video: McElligott Powers Melrose to Boys Soccer Win

A second-half goal by senior Anthony McElligott gave Melrose a 2-1 win over Woburn on Tuesday.

Tied, 1-1, in the middle of the second half, senior Anthony McElligott sent a perfectly placed shot through the top right corner of the net to give the Melrose boys soccer team a 2-1 win over visiting Woburn on Tuesday.

Melrose (2-1) came out aggressive to start the game, keeping the ball in Woburn's end for much of the second half. That pressure paid off toward the end of the half when sophomore Deslyn Pierrot put Melrose ahead, 1-0, on an assist from sophomore David Mendhelson.

The Tanners turned things around in the second half as Woburn was able to tie it at 1-1. But midway through the half, head coach Dean Serino called a time-out to settle his team down. Immediately after the break, McElligott scored the go-ahead goal to give the Red Raiders the 2-1 win.

"In the second half you're up, 1-0, and they score and they get the life and the momentum," said Serino. "We had to call a time-out and say, 'Listen, it's not going to go this way.' And then it was just a nice strike by Anthony McElligott."

Melrose will travel to take on Reading on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.
