Weekly Sports Roundup, April 11-17

The Melrose High sports squads continued play last week. Here's a look at how the locals fared.

The Spring season continued for Melrose High’s student athletes last week, with action on all fields. Here’s the rundown for the week of April 11.

Girls/Boys Tennis Beat Stoneham

Girls tennis saw several dates rained out last week, but was able to get in its meeting with Middlesex League rivals Stoneham on April 12, and come away with a convincing 5-0 sweep over the Spartans.

The Lady Raiders’ singles troika of Emma McGowan (first singles), Sarah McGowan (second singles) and Lydia Mays (third singles) all won their matches in straight sets. 

Charlotte Mays and Shannon Tarpey won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at first doubles, while Julia Mongeau and Natalie Kendall triumphed at second doubles, 6-4, 6-4.

The Lady Raiders were rained out against Woburn and Reading last week.

Melrose is now 2-3.

On the boys side of the court, the Red Raiders squeaked past Stoneham 3-2 on April 12 in a nail-biter.

Tim Mongeau won the decisive match for Melrose, his first win of the season. Tim Cobau won his second straight match and senior Zach Bachiri also emerged victorious.

Softball Goes 1-2

Melrose softball started the week off right, beginning with a convincing 15-3 rout of Middlesex League foes Belmont on April 12.

Morgan Phipps led the Lady Raiders to victory, pitching a solid game, while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a HR. Senior Athena Ziavras also homered and was 3-for-3.

That’s about the end of the good news, as the Lady Raiders followed up the win with losses to Burlington on April 14 and Malden on April 16. Melrose lost those two games by a combined 29-7.

The Lady Raiders are 1-2.

A Big Week for Melrose Baseball 

On the baseball diamond, the Red Raiders had a solid week and wrapped it up at 2-1. Melrose is now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ML.

The Red Raiders beat Belmont 7-4 on April 12 and Burlington 6-4 on the 14th behind Andy Scocca's 12 k's. Melrose was stopped for the first time this year by neighboring Malden on the April 16, by a score of 5-3.

Boys Lacrosse Finds Its Offense

After opening the season with a pair of ML losses last week, the Red Raiders boys lacrosse squad finally got itself into the win column this week.

Starting off against Woburn, Melrose turned its finest performance of the season to date, but the Tanners were able to squeeze out an 8-5 win. For three and a half quarters, it was anybody’s game, but the Red Raiders simply ran out of gas in the final frame.

Facing neighboring Malden on April 16, the Red Raiders offense finally came to life. The Red Raiders dressed four attackers for the game, and they took it over, as Melrose prevailed 15-2 at Pine Banks. 

Rich Taglieri collected 4 goals and 3 assists to pace the Melrose attack, while Cam McGuire scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists. Connor Mason had 3 goals and 1 assist, and Matt Clougherty added a goal.

Alex Surrette was brilliant in net for the Red Raiders, turning away 19 Malden shots.

The Red Raiders are now 1-3.

The Melrose girls were roundly defeated by ML rivals Winchester on April 14, by a lopsided score of 16-1.

Boys and Girls Track Split

The boys and girls track teams were in action this week as well, with the boys and girls teams both splitting their two meets last week.

The boys fell to Lexington 88-48 on April 12 and then beat Belmont 84-52 on April 14.

The girls lost 55-81 to Lexington on April 12 and routed the Marauders 101-35 on April 14.
