Summer Weekend Getaway: Sand Sculptures, Architecture Tours and Regattas

Wanna take a short trip this weekend? Check out what's happening on the Rhode Island and New Hampshire seacoasts, the Cape and Martha's Vineyard.

Looking for a fast and fun getaway from Melrose this weekend? Summer in New England is filled with options. Check out what's happening this weekend in a few favorite summer spots:

Cape Cod and the Islands

Weather: Expect mostly cloudy skies on Saturday with showers and thunderstorms early in the morning and temps in the low 70s. It'll start clearing up Saturday night and Sunday will be mostly sunny with highs in the low-to-mid 70s, with a low around 60 at night.

: Ever driven down William Street in Vineyard Haven and marveled at the historic homes and exquisite architecture? Now is your chance to get a better look. Five homes will be open for touring on Saturday, June 23 from 12:30-3 p.m., and guests are invited to finish their tour with lemonade, and cookies. The tour is $35 per person. There's also a lecture at 11 a.m. about historic Vineyard Haven Architecture—$15 lecture only, $45 for combined lectureand tour—and a special patron's brunch at 9:30 a.m. for $100, which includes the lecture and tour.

Rhode Island

Weather: There's a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 3 p.m. on Saturday in Newport, then a slight chance of showers. It'll gradually become mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 70s. Sunday will be mostly sunny with highs approaching 80.

: Newport is the last stop of the America's Cup World Series races next weekend, but first, this weekend the Sail Newport Youth Challenge Regatta will precede the ACWS with racing between Rose Island and Goat Island on June 23 and 24. Unofficial training and practice days for the ACWS will be held this weekend as well, which will be free to the public.

Seacoast New Hampshire

Weather: A chance of showers on Saturday, but it'll gradually become mostly sunny with a highs approaching 80. Sunday, a slight chance of showers, but still sunny with highs in the low 80s.

: The works of art will continue to take shape through Saturday at Hampton Beach, which includes the from 1 to 4 p.m. There's also a , although you do have to register in person Saturday morning at the across from the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and F Street. The winner of the Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition will be revealed during a ceremony at 8 p.m. Saturday—followed by a fireworks display—and the sculptures will be on lit display through July 8.
