- Robert J. Dolan was elected as the mayor of Melrose in 2001.
- He was a member of the Melrose School Committee from 1994 to 1998 and the vice chairman of the committee from 1996 to 1998. He was a member of the Board of Aldermen from 1998 to 2002.
- He served as the supervisor of Case Management of Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop Elder Services. He later joined the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center team as the Housing and Community Services director. He was then appointed as assistant executive director at Parkside in 1999.
- He completed his graduation from Melrose High School, B.A. in political science from Fordham University in New York City. He completed his master's degree in public administration from Northeastern University. He received his certificate in municipal governance and policy from Rappaport Institute at Harvard University Kennedy School of Government in 2003.
- Dolan is married to Alison and has a son and daughter.
